Event Production in Practice...
There are so many things I’m desperate to write about but finding the
time to sit down and type away is proving to be a struggle so far this year
with work and assignments piling up. However, 2nd year at University is already
proving to be 10x better than last year. I feel this is because I’m now much
more settled, so used to everything now and I know a little more about what to
expect.
I wanted to write about what I’m currently getting up to on one of my
courses at Uni – Event Production in Practice.
Last year I was a little disapointed about how there was no practical
element to the course, there was a lot of reading and not enough ‘doing’. Now
this year we’re still learning our theory in an Event Operations course but
alongside this we’re applying everything we’ve learnt to our own event
projects.
In our Event Production in Practice course we’ve been spilt up in our
seminars into smaller groups to put together an event of our choice to raise
money for a charity of our choice. This is all with a budget of £100 provided
by the Business School. Unfortunately this still needs to be paid back at the
end of the project so we’ve got the challenge of making at minimum £100 from
our events…
Last year and at the start of this year we’ve heard horror stories
about how stressful this has got for previous years and how friends all
collaborated on a project but by the end of it their friendship group had
fallen apart. We all know group work at university can get stressful when
someone isn’t pulling their weight or doing what they need to do by a certain
deadline but I hadn’t heard about the extreme cases where things got so bad
within a group they were actually moving out of their Uni houses…
My housemate Shona happens to be in my seminar group and we were almost
petrified of loosing our friendship over a project by working together but we
asked ourselves “things can’t really get THAT bad can they?”. And so far they
haven’t, at all! I’m working with a brilliant group of 4 other girls, 1 being
Shona! Last night we submitted our first written piece of group work – our
Event’s Written Proposal, 4,500 words long! 5 days early!! Our group has so far
got on so well and we’ve all been equally distributing the tasks and workload
out fairly! We’re already seeing in our seminars we’re even slightly ahead
compared to other groups so we’re going to be feeling very smug in this week’s
seminar when we can go in and say our works already done and submitted!
All of us have some great contacts who’ve been able to help us out
already, for example one of the girls Irina works in a Café doing the marketing
for their events and sales and has managed to secure that venue for free! Laura
is friends with the University club photographer and he’s agreed to come and
take pictures of the night, and as for Katie she lives with a friend who DJ’s
who has also agreed to DJ on the night of our event! It’s so far all coming
together so well…
I should probably provide you with a little insight as to what we’re planning
for our event. We’re going to be holding a live music night at the very start
of March 2016 in support of the charity CoppaFeel! With the aim of raising
awareness about breast cancer amongst students in the area.
At our event we plan to have 3 live music acts, DJ, photographer,
facepainting, photobooth and more. Tickets are only being charged at £5.
So if you study at the University of Greenwich or in the surrounding
area do make sure you’re checking your social media in the New Year for
advertisement of our event ‘MicCheck’ as we’d love to see you all there!
I’d love to keep you updated with how this project pans out and what is
happening at each stage in the process, so be sure to check back onto my blog
for more updates!
Thanks for reading,
Izzie x
